Summer Term 1

Hello and welcome to Class 2.

Here you can find your class page where you can keep up to date with your child's learning ðŸ˜Š

Our theme this half term is Roots, Shoots and Muddy Boots!

This term, we will explore a range of fiction and non-fiction texts to learn about life cycles, new life, and plants. As part of this topic, children will investigate the life cycles of frogs and sunflowers, gaining an understanding of growth, decay, and changes in plants. They will also learn how to care for plants and the conditions they need to grow successfully. Through hands-on experiences, children will plant and nurture their own plants, enabling them to identify and label the different parts of a plant and flower.

We will begin with a curiosity-focused week, linked to one of our school values, where we will read The Wonder and encourage the children to ask thoughtful and important questions.

Following this, we will read Jack and the Beanstalk by Ed Bryan, completing a variety of comprehension and writing activities inspired by the story. These will include sequencing events and developing sentence-writing skills.

In phonics, we will continue learning Phase 3 phonemes and common exception words, applying this knowledge to blend and segment words for both reading and writing.

In maths, children will develop their understanding of numbers to 10 by counting, comparing, and ordering. They will also explore sequencing events, using positional language, and comparing and ordering different measures.

In PE, we will continue to build gross motor and fundamental movement skills during both indoor and outdoor sessions. Our focus will include running, pushing, rolling, throwing, and climbing. Outdoor learning will further support these skills through large-scale construction activities, as well as the use of balance bikes and scooters, helping to develop strength, balance, coordination, and agility.

We will also practise letter formation through daily handwriting sessions, supported by Red Rose ditties. Alongside this, children will develop their listening, attention, speaking, and social skills through play-based learning and circle time.

In expressive arts and design, children will create collage artwork inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers.

Thank you,

Mrs Holden & Mrs Masser
