    Geographical priority area

The cut off points at the south end of the area will be Lord Street and its houses and Forest Bank Road (both off the A682).The line will run East down the middle of Forest Bank Road and across the top of Short Clough reservoir. For confirmation, this GPA includes Higher Nutshaw Farm, Dunnockshaw. For confirmation, this GPA includes Higher Nutshaw Farm, Dunnockshaw.

When a primary school with a GPA is oversubscribed the following priorities will be applied in order:

    1. Looked after children or a child who was previously looked after, but immediately after being looked after became subject to an adoption, child arrangement order, or special guardianship order or those children who appear to the school to have been in state care outside of England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted, then

    Tie Breaker

The distance criterion will be used as the tie breaker if there is oversubscription within any of the admission criteria; it is a straight line (radial) measure.

If the Local Authority is unable to distinguish between applicants using the published criteria (eg. Siblings, those living the same distance from home to school, or families residing in the same block of flats) places will be offered via a random draw.

The distance measure is a straight line measurement (radial) between the applicant’s home address points  and the address point of the school (co-ordinates provided by ordnance survey data).

    In Year Admissions

Before you apply to change schools, you will need to speak to the current school and the school you intend to move your child to.

Changing schools during the school year

To move your child to a different school you must apply for an in-year admission.

This is different from an application for the usual transfer points, starting reception year of primary school or year 7 of secondary school.

    How to apply

The different types of schools and academies have different in-year admission arrangements.

Follow the relevant link below for a list of schools of each type and how to apply:

You should not use this process if you are applying for

    • a school which is in another local authority area, such as Blackpool or Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council - please contact them directly
    • a child who has an education, health and care (EHC) plan - please contact the Inclusion Service for guidance
    • a Looked After Child - please apply directly through the local area education office

    After you apply

Your application will be processed by the local area education office inline with the Admissions Code and fair access policy.

The local authority will acknowledge receipt of your application and then write to you with the outcome within approximately 15 school days (this does not include weekends or school holidays).

There is no need to contact the authority before the 15 days have passed. Remember to check your spam or junk mail folders before you get in touch.

The Access to Education Entitlements privacy notice tells you how the autority process personal data.

    Receiving a school offer

If the school you request has places, your child will be offered a place at the school and you will receive your offer letter via email or post. You must contact the school within 5 school days of the offer date to arrange school admission. The expectation is that the child will be admitted to the school within 15 school days after the school offer notification.

If the school you request doesn’t have any places, you will be notified and should contact the area office to find out about availability of places at other local schools. You also have the right to appeal against the refusal of a place in current Reception class to current Year 11.

Children already attending a local school

Where a child is already on roll at a local school, they must continue to attend until the date of admission to the new school.

    Appeals

If you are unhappy with your school offer you can appeal for any schools which at that time have no available places. Information and advice is available from the admissions team at your local area education office.

We advise you to visit the school you are offered before you go to appeal.
